Question:

Is there some trick to sorting a column in Power UX? I want to sort by Amount on my document list, but when I click the top of the column, my results are unexpected.

Answer:

Column sorting in Power UX is a little different from sorting in the Classic UI.  In Classic, you could sort on only one column at a time. In Power UX, you can set up nested sorts, meaning that you can choose one criteria (column) to sort on and then a secondary criteria (column) to sort on, etc. Usually when you get to a grid, the rows are already sorted by a first criteria. When you click on a different column header, you are selecting the secondary criteria.

In order to help you understand what is going on, a message appears indicating which columns are being sorted. For example, in the picture below, the Doc No is the primary sort. If you click on the Amount column (thinking that you are going to sort by Amount only), Spitfire will make that a secondary sort. A small number 2 indicates that this is a secondary sort.

If you like multiple sorts on your grid you should know that:

  • Clicking on the chevron a second time on the column header will change the direction of the sort (Ascending or Descending).
  • Clicking on the chevron a third time on the column header will turn off sorting on that column.

If you want to go back to a single sort at a time:

  • Press the Ctrl key while clicking on the chevron on the column header of the only column you want to sort on. This will replace the multi-sort with a single sort.
  • Click on the same chevron again to change the direction of the sort (Ascending or Descending).
