KBA-01014: What does an error referencing mscorlib.dll or that my application failed to initialize properly mean?

Question:

When I launch Spitfire software on a particular machine I get an error that mscorlib.dll could not be loaded.

Answer:

The .NET Framework version 1.1 is a component of the Microsoft Windows® operating system used to build and run Windows-based applications.   The mscorlib.dll is the core component of the framework runtime. You can check to see if you already have the .NET Framework 1.1 installed:

  1. Click Start on your Windows desktop.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
  4. When that window appears, scroll through the list of applications. If you see Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 listed, then the version is installed.  If version 1.0 is listed, you need to upgrade.

Additional Comments:

You may also see the dialog Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135).  Click OK to terminate. You can download the runtime using Windows Update or from links at http://www.microsoft.com/net/
